I believe that simple algebra is a source for breaking down the design process to a simple framework. I believe that using simple algebra can give you a direction for a project. All designers are deeply connected with the term "form follows function" which can be broken down to simply Function = form. This credo gave designers a framework to work around that developed modernism. I believe that this framework can be modified and reutilised by adding other words relating to the design process. Eg. Construction, concept, content, style,format etc.

If you input this into the design equation then a new credo can be born which can give you
a rationale behind a project

NEW: TOUCH OF EVIL
The following list of words are all the words spoken within the film Touch of Evil directed by Orson Welles, 1958. They have been alphabetized and cross-referenced to two dictionaries. The most recent being the Pocket Oxford English Dictionary, Tenth Edition, 2005 (the current dictionary at time of this study). The other dictionary being the Pocket Oxford English Dictionary, Fourth Edition, 1955, which was the dictionary available at the time of the films production.

With 50 years inbetween them, the content of each dictionary has changed dramatically including losing and gaining of words as well as incredible definition changes and additions as the language evolves. This study is to show how in such a short space of time our common dictionaries have been altered to allow more commonly used and new words to be printed and remove the less spoken and less neccessary words.

Some Spanish dialogue is spoken within the film, these words have again be alphabetized and are found at the end.

It is important to note that even though some words have been removed from 2005 dictionary they may not have been removed from the Full Oxford English Dictionary which is currently 12 volumes.

"By shifting the emphasis of the class from typographic “experiment” (whatever that means) to typographic resesarch, we were able to both broaden and deepen our activities as typographers. Instead of the misplaced oblgation to simply “break rules,” we could now examine the assumptions underlying typographic rules and traditions, making any disobediences more calculated, disciplined, and purposeful. We were also able to see how certain typographic practices—modular typefaces, for example—have always been categorically described as “experimental” (largely because of their form), and we were better able to connect our own work in this area to the historic tradition. Finally, we were able to examine the nature of written language itself, how it differs from speech, how it is represented through alphabets and ideograms, how the Latin alphabetic characters function as a formal group, and so on. We labored to examine the practice of typography through both philosophical and material lenses."

Above: Joanne Chew’s project played off the supposed neutrality of Helvetica by injecting it into our national political discussion. Splitting the typeface vertically, she produced “Helvetica Left Wing” and “Helvetica Right Wing” and set comments on health care from Democratic and Republican candidates on a large silkscreened broadside. Printed in reverse on the back in black is the full text of the broadside, which shows through to complete the characters and make them legible.

The brief was to create a book based on a collection. I decided to create a book collecting together people’s suspicions
about numbers. It contains articles found online, quotes from lottery chat rooms, responses to a questionnaire I created,
my own photographs and scratch cards I purchased. The title is the Unicode code for the word ‘numbers’, I wanted
people to create their own suspicions about what it stood for.

The brief set was to redesign a CD cover using an unpredictable process. I created this cover for the
MSTRKRFT album ‘The Looks’ by playing 100 games of noughts and crosses. All the games were placed
into a grid and I hole punched the noughts to create the pattern seen on the cover.

This visualization started as a collaboration between Christoph Romhild and Chris Harrison. As Chris explains: "Christoph, a Lutheran Pastor, first emailed me in October of 2007. He described a data set he was putting together that defined textual cross references found in the Bible. He had already done considerable work visualizing the data before contacting me. Together, we struggled to find an elegant solution to render the data, more than 63,000 cross references in total. As work progressed, it became clear that an interactive visualization would be needed to properly explore the data, where users could zoom in and prune down the information to manageable levels. However, this was less interesting to us, as several Bible-exploration programs existed that offered similar functionality (and much more). Instead we set our sights on the other end of the spectrum - something more beautiful than functional. At the same time, we wanted something that honored and revealed the complexity of the data at every level - as one leans in, smaller details should become visible".

This process ultimately led them to the multi-colored arc diagram shown here. The bar graph that runs along the bottom represents all of the chapters in the Bible. Books alternate in color between white and light gray. The length of each bar denotes the number of verses in the chapter. Each of the 63,779 cross references found in the Bible is depicted by a single arc - the color corresponds to the distance between the two chapters, creating a rainbow-like effect.

Project Description:
Time Travel was part of one of Oskar Karlin's final projects at London College of Printing (now London College of Communication). It started as an attempt to redesign the London Underground map. As Karlin puts it: "How could I come up with some innovative ideas to this piece of design that is by many considered as one of the best in graphic design ever"

Karlin started thinking on what's currently different in the world from when the map was designed, and pointed time as the key differentiator. As he explains: "Today you never tell anyone how far away in miles you live, but in minutes or perhaps hours if you're unlucky". Therefore, Karlin decided to create a re-design based on time instead of geographical distance.

Since Karlin's school was in Elephant & Castle, he used the station as time 0 and then created zones for each 5 minutes travel from Elephant & Castle. The idea is that the background is different on each station around the system.

The image shows the final map focused on Elephant & Castle with time zones. The scale in the bottom left is a time scale, in minutes. Each zone represents 5 minutes.

Final project for my MA at Central Saint Martins. It is a project about the how we track weather, the rain in particular. For a 4 week period the rain was measured by the actions that make up my life.

The final presentation takes the form of a series of 12 books. Each book folds out to create a perfect circle. The books form concentric circles, the largest being 1.75 meters across.

Stage #1: Data Collection
Okay, Stage #1. For a period of 4 weeks life revolves around the rain. Data was collected from 15th January - 11th February. Three types of data were collected: Recorded, Observed, and Recounted. The different
collection methods are explained breifly below. Each stems from a specific strain of research, which might someday be explained here. The competitor data sources are also explained.
Recorded: My data

Put simply, if rain is present I am unhealthy, if it is not I am healthy. The rain determines all decisions regarding health. This covers decisions about food, exercise, transport, and smoking/drinking. Weight and BMI (body mass index) are recorded at 8 am every morning, and an image is taken to show visible progress.

Observed data is the simplest type of data. It is the weather that we experience. Coming in contact with the weather allows one to say, without a doubt, that a certain type of weather took place.

A true hero in the history of big things. A true hero to young Jake Hobart.

Carrol set out to make the world a better place, an admirable task. Among many grandious plans to do this lies his unfinished masterpiece. A 200 mile long jetty spanning the North Sea. The jetty would halt the icy cold Labrador current coming from the arctic. The Labrador current is famous for meeting up with the jet stream and shooting it easterly. With the Labrador current blocked by a massive jetty the Jet Stream is free to roll up further north, melting the ice caps of Greenland, then on to create fertile farmlands across Scandanavia and then into northern Russia and Siberia, while changed the rotation of the earth as well.

Lewis is smarter than you. Lewis was a pacifist, so while serving during the WWI he was assigned to ambulance duty. He sat and looked at the sky, and started writing a formula to predict the weather. It spans hundreds of pages. In 1922 it was published. It is still in use today.

Weather Diaries

Before the use of instruments to collect data on weather, personal weather diaries were used. Often times kept by non-professionals these were a curious form of recording. Facts about weather such as wind speed, barometric pressure, rainfall, etc. are sometime interspersed with personal reflections, stories about livestock, town gossip, and other interesting pieces of non-weather realated information.

For the cover of the FOAM Album 07 which looks back over 2007 at the Amsterdam Museum of Photography (FOAM), I manually cut the numbers 0 and 7 out of all the pictures that were to be printed in the book. The result was two piles of around 500 pictures each. At the top and bottom of these piles, I put two images taken in the museum itself,
literally cutting through the museum’s 2007 activities and putting them back into their exhibition space, which the book reflects.Commissioned by Vandejong and Museum of Photography Amsterdam FOAM.

We set out to make a poster that honors the traditional supermarket calligraphy to reflect the combination of culture and commerce. The shopping mall was hoping to gain cultural capital with the festival, and ironically found the poster being too commercial. It was used to announce the festival in the city, but Ny Musikk was denied hanging it in the mall.

Daniel Eatock is a London-based designer known for his conceptual approach to solving traditional client problems as well as those of his own choosing. Eatock graduated from the Royal College of Art and worked as a designer at the Walker Art Center before returning to England to create Foundation 33 and most recently Eatock Ltd. His work has consistently employed a systematic but not necessarily dogmatic rigor that privileges the elemental over the extraneous—a philosophy neatly embodied in his motto: “Say YES to fun & function & NO to seductive imagery & colour!” His work for entertainment and cultural clients ranges from such projects as the graphic identity and promotion for the British television hit Big Brother to a street exhibition of Warhol billboards for Channel 4 to a collaboration with artists Oliver Payne and Nick Relph for an exhibition catalogue with sound chips, a flip book, handwritten notes, and a cover wrapped in the upholstery fabric used on London transit seating. Eatock’s idea of “entrepreneurial authorship” has led to the creation of numerous self-published limited-edition works such as Untitled Beatles Poster, which includes the lyrics from every Beatles song, and the 10.2 Multi-Ply Coffee Table, fabricated from an entire single sheet of plywood.

what have i learnt about myself?

-Im easily distracted and my mind works in short sharp bolts rather than long drawn out prose this is why i have written this evaluation in bullet points.

- I am incredibly indecisive

-I am not as good as i think i am

-I am most happy when playing with design rather than working with it.

-I try to be to clever.

-I let graphics take over my life, i become obsessed with it, it becomes my everything. I become to wrapped up with it and forget about everything else, this is wrong, i should as shaugnessy says become more "culturally aware", this will give me something something else to be passionate about other than graphic design.

-While at an exhibition of posters from the student revolution of '68 in paris, i realised that i really want a revolution to happen, a massive social would make me feel like my life meant something, that i wasnt just one of the million art and design students hoping to succeed in a rapidly saturating design industry.

-I have learnt that organisation and time management etc mean little when trying to find a job or get a placement. Interviewers do not care whether you know exactly what your doing each and every hour of the day. All they really care about is whats in your portfolio. Although i'm not trying to undermine the importance of these attributes to a designer i do think that i have concentrated on these areas far to much rather than concentrating on who i am as a designer, and what I am happy doing.

-I am in control of my life, no one else is.

What have i learnt about my design practice?

-I do too much research

-I have realised that i should use research to further my ideas, and that it should fully synthesise with my work.

- I delve into the research so far that my projects become research projects rather than design projects,

- I should get stuck into design and use visual thinking to further the development of my work.

-that a system that is too structured gives structured and systematic results, so that work becomes to similar. I have learnt that my design practice should be fluid and and organic and not a taylorist regime.

-when at an interview with graham fink he said that there should be more of my soul into graphic design, this confused me at first,"my soul?! what the hell do you mean my soul?!" but as this statement has mulled over in my mind it has started to make more sense. I have now realised that it has to come out of me through doing it rather than thinking about what it is.

- I am to quick to work out why my ideas dont work rather than how they could work.

- I should design first think later.

-Complicated is not clever, simple is better.

-i over complicate things far to quickly, i get so wound up in the project i forget to stand back and trully evaluate whether it is working, i expect other people to understand it because i do.

-I have realised that i have done almost no posters at all. I have always tried to keep away from them, because i have believed that it is a tired format(everybody does posters), but now when putting my portfolio together that posters are not tired and that thee be so much done within the limitations of a poster.

- i have learnt that i need limitations they give me something to evaluate my work against. they give me a specification to work too, a clear set of boxes that the project has to forfill. So next year i will set myself limitations.

- i need to find my own place in the industry and this will only come through understanding what the possibilities are.

- realistically i need someone else to make decisions for me, to keep me line to stop me wondering off into my own mind.

-I have developed a basic understanding of quark, after affects and flash, i now know the limitations and possibilities of these programs.

-Working with flash has enlightened me on how to create depth using perspective in a 2d screen.

- i have developed an understanding of sequential design.

- i have developed presentation skills but these need improvement still.

- i need to put more time into the craft of my ideas.

- i am confused about where i fit into the industry or where i am going as a designer. really i am unaware of the possibilities. realistically i would want to work in a small studio and not a massive agency, but this is as far as it goes. realistically i do not want to work in a design factory.

-Working collaboratively meant that we were able to cross evaluate what we were doing. I realised that we must work individually within the group on different tasks to make the most out of the creative partnership. Although we found it difficult to make decisions at some points we generally agreed on a lot of the key points.

-I have learnt about the limitations of print production and how to use these as a starting point or as a constant consideration for design.

-I have learnt of the different printing methods such as offset lithography, flexography, dye sublimimation, letterpress, heatpress, spot colour and cmyk process colours. I have learnt what the advantages of these processes are and their different applications.

-I have learnt how to setup my artwork for print production, using illustrator, photoshop and In design.

-I have realised that some print techniques are appropriate for different formats such as packaging or posters to cut down on cost of printing, but I have also learnt that this should not been seen as a limitation but an opportunity for design development.

-I have learnt of the visual gamut and the range of different colours that aren’t available in the cmyk gamut, but I have also learnt how to achieve these colours using spot colours.

-Spot colours have shown me how I can achieve print finishes such as gloss varnish or lumo.

-I have developed the use of printing methods such as monotone and duotone to create continuity. Utilising the constraints of these two methods to create striking design to capture attention.

-One of the main things that I have learnt through this module is using the limitations of print, and how to constantly keep the limitations in mind throughout design.

-I have also learnt how to alter and develop ideas so they can work in different processes. I.e changing an idea from full colour to black and white. I have also Learnt how to make use of this to further my design, e.g.using negative out on black and white, to highlight specific areas.

Identity for a small studio producing sound design
and music. A limited budget and the need to package
a large number of formats informed our solution.

A multi-purpose letterhead was designed to be cut
and folded along pre-printed keylines and scores,
to create the appropriate media insert. Supported by
a single sheet of labels the end result meant that
all formats were covered by a single letterhead, mini-
mizing cost and waste.

"We were approached by Adrian Shaughnessy of This is Real Art, to get involved in a project encouraging new subscriptions to Creative Review. Six design studios were asked to rethink an 'everyday design'. We chose London’s street signage – which is in a dire state. Whilst we cannot claim to be able to solve a problem of this magnitude
in a small project such as this, we could at least provide some ideas.

With the impending Olympics there will be a massive demand on the city so there is a need to re-assess our basic means of orientation. As demonstrated, the signage in London is at best out dated and fragmented and at worst confusing.

Graham's entrance into the advertising industry was slightly unconventional.

After applying for a job at CDP (then London's top creative hot shop), Graham was told they were looking for a candidate with more experience. Undeterred, Graham returned the following day dressed up as an old man. They gave him the job.

In his days at CDP, Graham created some of advertising's most memorable images including Benson & Hedges and Silk Cut Campaign. Following CDP, Graham went on to hone his skills as a Creative Director at WCRS, Saatchi & Saatchi and GGT.

In 1995, Graham began directing commercials and music videos at the Paul Weiland film company. In 1996, he became the youngest ever President of D&AD (Design and Art Directors Association). He was subsequently voted into D&AD's 'Art Direction book' representing the top 22 Art Directors of all time.

As a true Renaissance man, Graham's award winning photography has been used in many advertising campaigns including Sony PlayStation's 'Blood' and 'Mental Wealth' poster campaigns. He also directed a short film ( Z ) for the Millennium, commissioned by David Puttnam which was shortlisted at BAFTA.

In 2001, he created thefinktank-a conceptual production company. In 2005, Graham became Creative Director at M&C Saatchi.

Over the years, Graham has won countless awards for his work including: Gold Lions, D&AD Pencils, Gold British Television Arrows, Gold Campaign Press and Poster Awards, and various others.

In his ‘spare time’ Graham runs what some have called Britain's most radical art school.

The ad asks people to re-appraise their current perception of price comparison websites by reminding them that these sites are ‘middlemen’ and certain Direct Line car insurance benefits are only available direct.

To encourage manual workers of Britain to reach for Lucozade Energy when they suffer an energy lull at work, by reminding them what can happen when they lose their edge.

i cant see the relation to they type and the image that they are in. I cannot see how the image relates to the message. Although i do like the integration of the type into the environment.

these images form a series called "things i have learned in my life so far" that are collated into a book(see below)

this book is based on a list of maxims made by the graphic designer on his “experimental year” in 2000, where he took time out from working on commercial projects. While the maxims read as a mixture of wise pragmatism with philosophical reflection, they quickly became incorporated into projects for clients when Sagmeister’s office reopened, and it is 20 of these projects that form the book.

some are more succesful than others. The simpler ones work best, and so do the ones that combine the image and the type.

SAgmeister goes for the big idea, but i dont think that the message is always crystal clear. He generally picks up on a detail in what the graphic is for and uses this to create a simple idea that has integrity. i.e. the above poster uses cofee cups. picking up on the point that many design students drink alot of coffee.

another idea that interested me that i found in his book "made you look" . It was an album cover for a band. the album was called scratch, so he used sandpaper for the album insert, the sandpaper would then slowly scatch the plastic jewel case.
